What is Active & Passive Voice?
Active Voice: In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action.
Example: The teacher explains the lesson.
Passive Voice: In passive voice, the subject of the sentence receives the action.
Example: The lesson is explained by the teacher.
The key difference is who is performing the action. In active voice, it’s the focus is on who is doing the action. In passive voice, the focus shifts to the person or thing who receives of the action.
Why Do We Need It?
Mastering both voices can improve your writing in many ways:
- Clarity: Active voice is often clearer and more direct.

- Tone: Passive voice can sound more formal or impersonal, which can be very useful in academic and professional writing.
